That's a great analogy for more reasons than one. Big data is not just about size (although that's important), but it's also about captruing real-time changes in the environment from which the data is captured. A pebble doesn't change much in real time, the earth does. Also, the variety of information you can collect from the earth is much richer than what you would get from a pebble. These are the three V's (volume, velocity, variety) of big data.
